Safer Drivers Course

The first six months after receiving your provisional licence are the riskiest. It can be challenging to be on the road without the support of an experienced instructor. Our Safer Drivers Course equips young drivers with the competence they need to smoothly transition to a full licence.

A government-run program run through the PCYC (Police Citizens Youth Club), this course aims to provide learner drivers with the right knowledge and skills to become a safe driver. As an accredited provider of the Transport for NSW Safer Drivers Course, PCYC knows that our students who complete this course will gain a greater understanding of how to be a responsible P-plate driver—from reducing road risks to preventing accidents.

PCYC NSW is the largest provider of driver education programs across New South Wales. With over 60 clubs, we have the ability to deliver this course state-wide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Driver Education Programs
  • What makes you a safe driver?

A safe driver is an alert driver. This means that you should always be on lookout for the safety of yourself and others before you get in the car and while driving. Observe cautionary measures such as examining your vehicle for repair and maintenance issues, avoiding distractions like texting, and driving to the speed limit.

  • How can you avoid distractions while driving?

Most driving distractions involve the senses: visual, manual, auditory and cognitive. So, these are things that makes you take your eyes off the road, take your hands off the wheel, and take your mind off of driving.  Examples are texting, daydreaming, eating or drinking and other multitasking activities.

  • What are the rules for learner drivers?

Learner drivers must comply with the NSW road rules for a smooth flow of traffic. Some of the rules include:

    • Must only drive cars
    • Have L plates displayed visibly at the front & back of your vehicle
    • Be supervised by an individual with a full Australian drivers licence
    • Must not tow any other vehicle

You can find more information here: https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/safety-rules/road-rules/index.html

  • Where should I place a P plate?

P plates are displayed in the front and back of a car, on the rear of motorcycles and trailers. A red P means a P1 driver for the first 12 months while a green P means a P2 driver for the next two years.

  • What is the minimum age required to apply for a driver licence?

The minimum age is 16-years-old before you can apply for a driver licence. To become a fully licensed driver, you will need to prove your identity in a service center, pass a Driver Knowledge Test (DKT), and have your eyes tested.
